Ideal for: adults building everyday confidence in English.

Courses for adults - A2 Key

A2 Key Curriculum Overview

Courses for adults - A2 Key Curriculum Overview

At A2 Key, the curriculum should build the learner’s ability to handle basic everyday English with growing confidence. The focus of this level is to show that a learner can understand and use basic phrases and expressions, understand simple written English, introduce themselves and answer basic questions about themselves, and interact with English speakers at a basic level. That means the course centres on practical language for everyday situations, simple personal communication, and essential survival English.

Courses for adults - A2 Key Curriculum - Reading and writing

In reading and writing, learners need to work with short real-world texts, including signs, brochures, newspapers and magazines, and to handle tasks such as identifying the main message, matching short texts to questions, reading a longer text for detail and main ideas, completing vocabulary gaps in a factual text, and completing gaps in an email with one word. On the writing side, candidates write a short email or note of 25 words or more and a short story of 35 words or more from picture prompts. This means that students at this stage engage with reading short notices and simple informational texts, building basic vocabulary in context, controlled grammar practice through gap-fill tasks, and short guided writing based on messages, notes and pictures.

Courses for adults - A2 Key Curriculum - Listening

In listening, learners must understand announcements and other spoken material when people speak reasonably slowly. The listening paper includes identifying key information in short dialogues and choosing the correct visual, so the curriculum develops the ability to catch essential information from short, clear spoken texts and everyday exchanges.

Courses for adults - A2 Key Curriculum - Speaking

In speaking, the A2 Key curriculum shows that learners can take part in a conversation by answering and asking simple questions. So the curriculum focuses on short personal responses, basic question forms, simple exchanges about familiar topics, and classroom routines that help learners gain confidence in face-to-face communication.

Courses for adults - A2 Key Curriculum - Practical Terms

In practical curriculum terms, A2 Key focus on:

  • understanding short everyday written texts
  • using basic grammar and core vocabulary in context
  • writing short functional messages and simple stories
  • understanding slow, clear spoken English in everyday situations
  • asking and answering simple questions about familiar topics.
