EYFS at Richmond Park
A Gentle Introduction to School Life
Pre-Nursery (Ages 2–3)
Our Pre-Nursery is where your child’s learning journey begins. It offers a safe, nurturing, and joyful environment where children take their first steps into structured learning through play, discovery, and meaningful interaction.
Our youngest learners develop independence, confidence, and curiosity as they explore the world around them. They are supported by caring teachers who celebrate every achievement, no matter how small.
Learning through play and discovery
The Pre-Nursery curriculum is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework, focusing on the prime areas of development:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
Learning experiences are designed to be hands-on, sensory, and responsive to each child’s interests.
Through songs, stories, art, movement, and outdoor exploration, children begin to build early social, motor, and communication skills -all while having fun!
“At this stage, learning is all about joy, connection, and curiosity. We build confidence through comfort, care, and consistency.”
— EYFS Team
Themes and topics
Each term, children explore exciting topics that make learning relevant and engaging.
Typical themes include:
- All About Me – understanding themselves, family, and emotions
- Colours and Shapes – discovering patterns in the world
- Celebrations – learning about cultural events, such as Halloween and Christmas
- Animals and Nature – exploring the seasons, sounds, and textures around them
Activities are often led by children’s natural curiosity, allowing them to develop at their own pace within a structured, supportive environment.
Daily rhythm
Our Pre-Nursery day follows a calm and predictable rhythm, giving children a sense of security and routine.
A typical morning may include:
- Free exploration and sensory play
- Circle time with songs and stories
- Outdoor discovery or creative movement
- Snack time and self-care routines
- Themed activities linked to current topics
Afternoons are spent consolidating learning through quieter play, music, art, or guided small-group sessions.
A home away from home
We recognise that starting school is a big milestone for both children and parents.
Our teachers prioritise emotional wellbeing, helping children form secure attachments and develop the confidence to separate from caregivers.
Every child is encouraged to express themselves, make friends, and learn how to share, take turns, and care for others.
Working with families
A strong partnership with parents ensures a smooth and happy start. We provide guidance on how parents can support early development at home. For example, through reading, singing, and simple play-based activities
Families stay connected through:
- Class Dojo for messages, photos, and weekly updates
- Curriculum Letters outlining themes and skills each term
- Online Parent–Teacher Meetings via Parents Booking
- Reports and key documents on the iSAMS Parent Portal
Together, we help children discover the joy of learning, one small step at a time.
