WHAT IS HAPPENING IN EYFS/PRIMARY AND SECONDARY?
IB Global Conference 5-8 October 2023
Mr Bird (Secondary Key Stage Leader) travelled to Dublin on 5 Thursday October to represent Richmond Park School at the IB Global Conference 2023 at the Convention Centre in his capacity as our school IB Coordinator.
Our school is currently in the process of becoming an IB school. Mr Bird works each week with an IB consultant and is involved in preparing our centre for future IB teaching.
During his time in Dublin, he attended a large number of training sessions, met inspirational colleagues from around the world and shared our experiences with IB leaders.
He heard inspiring presentations and developed professional friendships with many colleagues on a global scale.
One in Madrid, he shared his experiences with the rest of the academic staff, which will help develop future partnerships and continue the application process.
Mr Bird believes that the IB model will help to shape our students into compassionate leaders through the DP programme.
RPS Families informative meeting
On 6 October, the Richmond Park School family association, RPS Families, held its first meeting of the 2023/24 school year, which was attended by many families of students of the school.
This meeting, which is the first to take place after the formalisation and official constitution of RPS Families as an association, aimed to present the plan for this academic year 2023-24 with a series of activities, trainings and meetings for the entire educational community, among which was the star activity of this year: ‘ Night at the museum´. This experience will be offered to students from Year 4 to Year 7 and will take place next April.
Likewise, the calendar for the general elections for the Board of Directors, which is currently operating on a constituent basis, was established. These elections will be called during the week of 6 November 2023 and voting will be held during the week of 20 November 2023.
The last part of the meeting was dedicated to the exchange of impressions, reflections and suggestions between the attendees and the members of the Board of Directors of RPS Families and that we shall begin to work from RPS Families in coordination with the school (among others, co-existence and bullying prevention training, internet safety, extra-curricular activities, organisation of non-school trips, dining room, etc).
Finally, the representatives of RPS Families reminded those present that the association has started its membership recruitment process, with a fee of 20€ per family for the entire course 2023/24. Yr 8 trip to Gredos
Students from year 8 went on a Geography and Science trip to Gredos Centre, from Wednesday October 4 to Friday 6 October accompanied by three teachers.
While there, they learned about food chains and food webs and energy flow in ecosystems. Students were able to carry out a freshwater survey and use a key to identify the invertebrates in a mountain stream. A long hike to a glacial lake and a rural settlements survey completed the geographical portion of the trip.
In addition, the students played team building games and practiced some archery. In their free time there was a lot of football, swinging on the swings, playing ping pong, card games and table football. A memorable and enjoyable trip.
Supersonic Phonics Friends
On Tuesday 17 October, all Early Years staff participated in professional development on the Supersonic Phonics Friends programme. Supersonic Phonic Friends is created by Phonics’ and Early Reading expert Anna Lucas. It is a systematic and synthetic approach to teaching phonics and is fully validated by the UK’s Department for Education. It ensures children develop passion for reading and the confidence to independently apply their phonics skill when reading and writing. Richmond Park School is the first school in Spain to receive this training. Throughout out the day, staff observed model teaching sessions and learnt how the programme can be integrated into the Early Years curriculum. The day was highly inspiring and motivational. We are looking forward to incorporating the programme into our EYFS department and seeing children learn to ‘read with speed’ and ‘write with all their might!’
SPORTS
Madrid School Games Cricket Tournament
On Wednesday 4 October, Year 7 students attended St George’s School for the Years 7 & 8 Madrid School Games Cricket Tournament.
Richmond Park entered two teams, and both teams performed exceptionally well, and displayed some fantastic attitudes and abilities. One of our teams narrowly beat King’s College to progress into the semi-finals, where we faced Dallington.
The Y7 students worked tactically and were not only able to score more runs, but also managed to gain points by bowling many of the other students out.
In the final, we faced St George’s and both teams were exceptional, demonstrating excellent game knowledge, teamwork and individual performances. The final was nail biting, and a special mention goes to Nico and Bruno who batted last and had the tough job of scoring enough runs to ensure we won the match. Both boys were calm and understood exactly what they needed to do, and they executed this brilliantly.
The result of the final was 192 – 204 and already Mr Goodey and Miss Dartnell are looking forward to competing next year.
Well done to all children in Year 7 who represented the school!
Victory in our first friendly futsal match
On Saturday, Richmond Park u10s team played our first fixture against Padre Claret School. In an exciting game, the lead was exchanged multiple times before Richmond finally won the game 6-5. Next week, we play one final friendly match before the league season begins. Go Richmond!

Our students showing their artistic talent
We are pleased to inform you about a significant achievement by one of our students, Marcos S. in Year 6.
Marcos has created wooden depictions of the four house teams at Richmond Park. Notably, this work was completed at his home, demonstrating dedication and effort.
These wooden pictures are now displayed in the school corridor, enclosed in a glass frame. They represent not only Marcos’s artistic skill but also contribute to our school’s environment.
This accomplishment reflects the talent and commitment within our school community. It emphasizes the support that our students receive from their families.

Year 3 trip to Arqueopinto
We absolutely loved our trip to Arqueopinto! We learned about cave painting using natural materials and even had a go at painting in the dark just like in a real cave. We learned about the evolution of man, as well as how people in the stone age made jewellery and weapons.
We also had a go at throwing spears, learned how to make fire and used a stone age telephone. It was a thoroughly immersive and engaging learning experience which helped enhance the children’s learning about the Stone Age.
Year 3 trip – Vivo Vivaldi
As part of their music curriculum, Year 3 has visited the Real Teatro de Retiro to attend a multidisciplinary event called Vivo Vivaldi. It included music, contemporary dance, art, lights and more. The performance blended a selection of pieces of music by Antonio Vivaldi with ballet and scenic movements, in a high-level, colourful and magical production. It was an incredible experience that we all enjoyed so much!
Open Day for EYFS & Primary
On Saturday 21 October Richmond Park School opened its doors to welcome over 30 prospective families of our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Primary students.
The event was a resounding success, with an engaging hour-long presentation held in the performance centre. Ms Sanchez, the EYFS and Primary Leader, along with two of our middle management team coordinators, Ms Pritchard and Ms Morritt, took the stage to introduce parents to the school’s ethos, vision, and the incredible progression children experience as they transition from EYFS to Primary. Our Open Day showcased student work in reading, writing, and mathematics, illustrating our commitment to academic excellence.
The interactive session included a dynamic Q&A segment where parents actively participated by asking insightful questions. It was a truly enriching and informative Open Day that left parents with a deep understanding of what makes Richmond Park School an exceptional choice for their children’s education.
NABSS training for staff
On Saturday 21 October also, four teachers from Richmond Park School (2 from the Primary section and 2 from the Secondary one) attended a training session organised by NABSS, expertly lead by Wendy Dell.
A range of strategies for improving teaching and learning were covered.
It is crucial that our own association takes a lead on these CPD initiatives that are very beneficial for overseas school developing the National British Curriculum.
